About the Company

Adalat AI is building an end-to-end justice tech stack that automates manual and clerical pain points in courtrooms, giving judges back time to focus on what matters most: decision-making and delivering justice. Our solutions - from AI-powered transcription in Indian languages to case-flow management and document navigation - are now deployed across 9 states, covering nearly 20% of India’s judiciary. Backed by leading technology companies and funders, and incubated at MIT and Oxford, Adalat AI is working to eliminate judicial delays and expand access to timely justice. Founded by a team with backgrounds in law, technology, and economics from Harvard, Oxford, MIT, and IIIT Hyderabad, we are scaling rapidly across India and the Global South.

Role Overview

This isn't a typical recruiter role. You'll own hiring across two very different talent pools that rarely overlap: engineering and legal. On one side, you'll source ML engineers, full-stack developers, and SREs who are comfortable with on-premise model deployment and privacy-first infrastructure. On the other, you'll identify and assess legal associates, paralegal talent, and court-domain specialists who can work at the intersection of law and technology.

You'll also be recruiting for a nonprofit, which means you're not competing on cash. You're competing on mission, depth of technical work, and the chance to build software that runs in courtrooms across India and the Global South. That requires a recruiter who genuinely believes in what we're building — and can communicate it.

Key Responsibilities

End-to-End Recruiting

  • Own the full recruitment lifecycle across all open roles — from intake through offer acceptance

  • Build and maintain active pipelines for engineering, ML, legal, and operations functions

  • Conduct initial screening calls and coordinate assessments with hiring managers

  • Partner with the CTO for engineering/ML roles and with the Founders Office for legal and operations roles

Sourcing Strategy

  • Develop function-specific sourcing strategies across LinkedIn, GitHub, legal networks, law school campuses, and referrals

  • Build proactive pipelines for high-demand roles before they're open

  • Leverage Adalat's mission story and external recognition (IndiaAI, Government of India, OpenAI, Google) to attract mission-driven candidates

  • Develop our employer brand through community engagement, meetups, and partnerships with law schools and tech communities

Candidate Experience

  • Ensure every candidate, shortlisted or not, leaves the process with a positive impression of Adalat

  • Set clear timelines, communicate proactively, and close loops with candidates across the pipeline

  • Conduct honest conversations about compensation expectations early — we're a nonprofit and transparency is non-negotiable

Process & Metrics

  • Maintain our hiring pipeline in Airtable, keeping stage tracking and candidate records current

  • Build data-driven recruiting dashboards: time-to-fill, offer acceptance rate, source quality, diversity metrics

  • Continuously improve our JDs, screening rubrics, and interview processes based on outcomes

  • Partner with hiring managers on structured, bias-aware interview design

DEI & Culture

  • Champion diversity in the hiring pipeline — different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives make our teams stronger

  • Embed inclusive practices into every stage: job description language, structured interviews, diverse panels

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • 4+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience, ideally at a startup or high-growth organisation

  • Demonstrated ability to recruit across multiple functions — bonus if you've hired for both technical and non-technical roles

  • Strong sourcing skills: you don't wait for inbound; you go find people

  • Comfort discussing compensation honestly, including below-market nonprofit packages

  • Familiarity with ATS tools (we use Airtable for pipeline tracking)

  • Strong interpersonal skills — candidates should feel seen and respected, regardless of outcome

  • Genuine interest in Adalat's mission — you don't have to be a lawyer or an engineer, but you have to care about justice infrastructure

Nice-to-Have

  • Prior experience recruiting for legal-tech, civic-tech, government, or social impact organisations

  • Familiarity with recruiting engineers familiar with on-prem infra, ML, or privacy-sensitive systems

  • Experience recruiting legal professionals, paralegals, or court-domain talent

  • Background using data and metrics to drive recruiting decisions

  • Existing network in India's startup or legal ecosystem
