Adalat AI is building an end-to-end justice tech stack that automates manual and clerical pain points in courtrooms, giving judges back time to focus on what matters most: decision-making and delivering justice. Our products — AI-powered transcription in Indian languages, court dashboards, WhatsApp chatbots for litigants and advocates, AI-powered workflows for judges and registries, and the Paperless Courts platform that lets a state run its judiciary end-to-end on Adalat's infrastructure — are now deployed across 10 states, covering nearly 25% of India's judiciary.
Our work has been the subject of a Stanford case study, has won the Harvard President's Innovation Challenge, MIT Solve, and the AI Innovation Challenge at the Global AI Summit, and has been profiled in the Wall Street Journal. Backed by leading technology companies and funders, and incubated at MIT and Oxford, Adalat AI is working to eliminate judicial delays and expand access to timely justice. Founded by a team with backgrounds in law, technology, and economics from Harvard, Oxford, MIT, and IIIT Hyderabad, we are scaling rapidly across India and the Global South.
Role Overview
The Role
We are hiring a Product Owner to own one of Adalat AI's products end to end.
This is not a classic project-management role. We are open to senior engineers, designers, ML practitioners, and other product builders whose primary responsibility will be product ownership.
You will act as the CEO of your product: understand users, set direction, align the team, make trade-offs, manage stakeholders, and remain accountable from discovery through adoption.
Many people contribute. One person is answerable for the outcome.
Key Responsibilities
What You Will Own
Understand users, workflows, stakeholders, and the real problem.
Define product outcomes, priorities, non-goals, and success measures.
Turn evidence into clear requirements and make scope and sequencing decisions.
Align engineering, design, legal, ML, deployment, and operations.
Communicate commitments, changes, and risks early.
Own acceptance, adoption, reliability, and learning after launch.
Qualifications
What We Are Looking For
Experience managing a product or major product area in any capacity. You may not have held a Product Manager title or worked at a company with formal PM roles. We care that you have understood users, set priorities, aligned teams, shipped, and learned from outcomes.
A strong foundation in engineering, product design, ML, or another product-building discipline.
Evidence of high agency and end-to-end ownership in ambiguous environments.
Strong user-discovery and product judgment.
Clear communication across technical, operational, legal, and senior institutional stakeholders.
Comfort making trade-offs and being accountable for outcomes across functions.
Willingness to work directly with courts, lawyers, government partners, and users in the field.
Genuine motivation to improve justice systems.
Especially valuable
Experience with government, legal workflows, public infrastructure, or regulated industries.
Experience with zero-to-one, AI-enabled, multilingual, on-premise, or privacy-sensitive products.
Experience recovering a product with unclear requirements, ownership, or stakeholder trust.
Our Interview Process
We keep our process straightforward and transparent. Here's what to expect:
R1 — Intro Call (30 minutes)
An introduction to Adalat AI — our mission, the problem we're solving, and an initial conversation around role fit.
R2 — Design Deep-Dive (45 minutes)
A discussion on your past experience, design process, and how your background connects to the work we're doing.
R3 — Portfolio Review (60 minutes)
A walkthrough of your portfolio with a cross-functional panel — walk us through your work, decisions, and design thinking.
R4 — Culture Fit — Founder Chat (30 minutes)
A conversation with one or more of our founders to assess mutual fit and shared values.
R5 — Offer
If it's a great match on both sides, we'll move forward with an offer.
Note: The process may vary depending on seniority and role. For lead roles, a whiteboarding challenge may be added after the portfolio review.
We care more about evidence of product ownership than your previous title. If you repeatedly stepped beyond your formal role to make the whole product succeed, we want to hear from you.
