Adalat AI is building an end-to-end justice tech stack that automates manual and clerical pain points in courtrooms, giving judges back time to focus on what matters most: decision-making and delivering justice.

Our solutions, including AI-powered transcription in Indian languages, are now deployed across 9 states, covering nearly 30% of India's judiciary.

Backed by Y Combinator alongside leading technology companies and funders, and incubated at MIT and Oxford, Adalat AI is working to eliminate judicial delays and expand access to timely justice. We're the first nonprofit YC has backed in nearly five years, and one of the first Indian-founded nonprofits in its history.

Our Paperless Operations team is taking this further, digitising the full lifecycle of a case beyond the courtroom, from filing to scrutiny to registration to final judgment, into a single, continuous digital system across partner state judiciaries.

Role Overview

As a Product Designer on the Paperless Operations team, you will help scale a product that is already live in a partner court into a platform that works across multiple jurisdictions. This is a 1 to 100 role, focused on evolving a working first version into a system that performs reliably at scale and across varied court processes.

Every court operates with its own rules, forms, hierarchies and legacy processes. A significant part of the role is designing a single, coherent system that can be configured for each jurisdiction without fragmenting into separate versions.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role. It is less about pixel-perfect UI and more about systems thinking, structural clarity and design judgement applied to complex operational workflows.

Key Responsibilities

Join senior designers on end-to-end design for core workflows including filing, scrutiny, defect cure, registration, listing and disposal
Build patterns that allow one product to accommodate different court rules, forms, roles and approval hierarchies
Design AI-assisted filing and review experiences where users can understand, verify and correct what the system produces
Design for scale of use, keeping interfaces efficient for court staff working through large daily caseloads
Build and extend the design system so that design scales alongside the product
Work closely with our in-house legal team and user researcher to translate domain expertise and research findings into design decisions
Partner with engineers through implementation to ensure designs ship accurately

Qualifications

4 to 6 years of product design experience, with significant time spent on workflow-driven, web-first or B2B products
Experience taking a product beyond its initial release, such as expanding it to new use cases, resolving issues that emerged as usage grew, or establishing a design system around it
Strong systems thinking, with the ability to work across patterns, hierarchies and states rather than individual screens
Strong visual craft on information-dense interfaces such as tables, forms, multi-step flows and dashboards
Comfortable operating with a high degree of ambiguity and ownership
Proficient with modern design and AI tooling, with a considered view on how to apply them
A portfolio demonstrating product thinking, process and shipped work

Nice to have: exposure to legal-tech, gov-tech or enterprise products; experience designing AI-assisted workflows; experience with multi-tenant or highly configurable products.

A walkthrough of your portfolio with a cross-functional panel — walk us through your work, decisions, and design thinking.

R4 — Culture Fit — Founder Chat (30 minutes)
A conversation with one or more of our founders to assess mutual fit and shared values.

R5 — Offer
If it's a great match on both sides, we'll move forward with an offer.

Note: The process may vary depending on seniority and role. For lead roles, a whiteboarding challenge may be added after the portfolio review.
